Tested just last December was the that featured a flat-6 naturally aspirated engine making slightly less power than this 2.5GT's turbocharged flat-4. Turns out the GT trumps the R in every way except price; it costs $2000 more. But the money is worth it. The new GT even beats or equals the previous-generation Legacy GT in every performance category—except in a race to 60 mph, where it trails by a mere 0.2 seconds. It makes up for it with the extra cog of its 6-speed manual, and matches the quarter-mile time of the previous car with a 5-speed.

Window surrounds keep the cabin quieter than before, and thanks to the larger dimensions, there's more interior space. The trunk is cavernous and standard stability control combined with all-wheel drive alleviates fears of inclement weather. But best of all, the car has retained its performance and fun-to-drive character, all while gaining civility.
