When Toyota launched its FT-1 concept, the entire industry stood up and took notice of this new sports car. After further investigation, nearly all of us media folk drew a direct line between the new concept and the eventual return of the legendary Supra. We took the initiative to create a rendering of an FT-1-based Supra back in February, and what good is a new supra without the removable targa top that the model was known for having? So we are now adding a rendering of the convertible Supra to our repertoire today.

Once we created the coupe version of the our Supra rendering, the convertible version was pretty simple. All we needed to do was eliminate the center section of the roof, flatten out the rear section of the roof and add a frame just above the windshield. We also had to take some time to add in some seats to give it a more realistic look.

Just like with the coupe version of the Supra, converting the convertible model required revising the nose to lose that wild, F1-like nose, add more traditional headlights, smoothen out some of the air intakes and add on a more Supra-like rear spoiler.

I suspect that the convertible version will arrive about a year after the Supra coupe.

Drivetrain

All signs point toward a boosted V-6 engine as the powerplant for the next-generation Supra. Most estimates put this engine at about 400 horsepower, which would immediately put it in line with the upper echelon of its class. Don't be surprised to see a naturally aspirated V-6 in a base-model Supra either, much like we saw in the last-generation Supra.

Competitors

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

It's really hard to pinpoint a competitor for the Supra, as we have no idea what type of car it will be. If it has the aforementioned boosted V-6, expect it to be in a position to compete with the Corvette Stingray. Why not the Stingray convertible? Because that is a true drop-top car, and we think that the Supra will carry the same targa top it always did in its convertible variant, just the the Stingray.

The Stingray will have the Supra's number in raw power with its 460 ponies, but the Supra will likely weigh a little less, making the two very similar in speed tests.

The Corvette Stingray starts out at $53,000.

Nissan 350Z Roadster

Given the Supra has a base, naturally aspirated model, its prime competitor will be the 370Z roadster. Yeah, it is a traditional convertible, while the Supra will likely have a targa top, but its 332 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque seem about right to do battle with a non-turbo Supra. Plus the pricing of the two should line right up, as the 370Z checks in at $41,470 — a nice starting price range for the Supra.
